Ben Hayman is Hoselink’s resident horticulturist and the gardening expert behind many of our educational guides, seasonal tips, and gardening knowledge. With a practical, down-to-earth approach and a wealth of horticultural knowledge, Ben helps the Hoselink community approach gardening tasks with confidence and skill.

From Mechanic to Master of the Garden

Ben’s career path to horticulture began in an unexpected place. After high school, he spent six years working as an apprentice mechanic. However, a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and discussions with a friend studying horticulture prompted a significant career shift.

Ben began taking courses at TAFE while completing his mechanic duties, eventually transitioning full-time into the landscaping industry. Two and a half years later, he became fully qualified in horticulture and landscape construction. Today, Ben manages his own successful landscaping and maintenance business, The Garden Keeper, leading a team dedicated to cultivating and maintaining premium outdoor spaces.

Life Outside the Garden

When he is not consulting for Hoselink or managing his landscaping business, Ben is focused on his family. He has three young daughters - they frequently spend time with him in the garden, assisting with the harvest of fresh produce. In his spare time, Ben is an avid basketball fan. He follows the NBA closely and enjoys playing the sport himself, alongside catching up with friends.

Ben’s Top Gardening Advice

When asked for his primary advice for beginners, Ben emphasises the importance of learning through experience - "Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Plants are pretty forgiving. There is so much information out there and even the pros are still learning. Don’t hesitate to get out there and have a go."
